Ujjain: Family members of a man, who died during treatment in SS Gupta Hospital, created ruckus on the hospital premises on Sunday morning. The aggrieved kin accused the hospital management of demanding Rs 45,000 for releasing the body. However, police later intervened and handed over the body to the family.
Panwasa resident Kailash Dewda (45) was admitted to the hospital after he fainted on Friday. However, he died mid-treatment on Saturday night at around 9 pm. According to his father Ramesh Dewda, he deposited Rs 50,000 while admitting Kailash to the hospital and bought medicines worth Rs 25,000. However, after his son died, the hospital refused to release the body and demanded Rs 45,000 more citing medical bills. On Sunday morning, around 40 men gathered outside the hospital and demanded the management to release the body.
On being tipped off, Congress leader Ajeet Singh Thakur, Deepak Mehre and corporator Atmaram Malviya also reached the hospital and called in Madhav Nagar police to resolved the matter. TI in charge Gagan Badal said that the situation was created due to non-payment of bills and both the parties resolved the issue after being pacified by the police.
Hospital refutes charges, says Congress leaders politicised issue
SS Gupta Hospital managing director Dr Mayank Gupta said that “Kailash was admitted to the hospital in critical condition. As his scan revealed that he had a head injury, we referred him to Indore. But, his family refused to take him to Indore and asked Dr Khatri to operate Kailash here itself. The family was informed prior to the operation about the risk and expenses related to the operation. After Kailash died on Saturday night, his family requested the hospital management to keep the body till Sunday morning. The management agreed and even gave them a discount in their bill on humanitarian grounds and asked the family to deposit of Rs 45,000, the pending amount of the bill. The family members said that they will deposit the money before taking the body in morning. But in the morning, Kailash’s family gathered at the hospital with 50 men including Congress leaders and corporators and created chaos. They also falsely accused hospital management for not releasing the body.”
Dr Gupta also said that corporator Atmaram Malviya politicised the issue and tried to defame the hospital and its doctors. Madhav Nagar police staff then intervened in the matter and handed over Kailash’s body to his family on condition that they would pay the bill within a week. He also said the family just created a scene to avoid paying the bill.
