Detectives are investigating a burglary in which a suspect told a 90-year-old woman he was with the power company while an accomplice stole cash from a bedroom drawer, deputies said.

The burglary occurred Friday evening on Gardenia Avenue in DeBary, where the accuser told deputies a stranger started banging on her door around 5:45 p.m., according to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office.

The homeowner answered and the person at the door told her he was with the power company and her power was going to be shut off soon, deputies said.

The woman refused to open the door, but the suspect convinced her to let him onto her screened porch in the back, according to the Sheriff's Office. While he distracted her, a second suspect burglarized her house, sheriff's spokesman Andrew Gant said.

A family member came home later and discovered several bedroom drawers had been rifled through and cash had been stolen, deputies said.

Detectives are still investigating. Anyone with information is urged to call the Sheriff's Office at 386-248-1777.
