Four elephants run over by train in Odisha

JHARSUGUDA: At least four elephants were killed after being run over by an express train near the Bagdihi Railway Station in Jharsuguda district in the wee hours on Monday.
Sources said, the elephants including two adult jumbos and two calves, were hit by the Alleppey-Bokaro express train while they were crossing the track.
Local villagers first spotted the elephants lying on the railway track and informed the forest officials, forest officials rushed to the spot and removed the bodies from the track.
“Since it is an elephant corridor we had earlier moved to the Railways and asked them to keep the train on limited speed in that area. However, we will inquire under which circumstances the accident took place,” said Assistant Conservator of Forest Pradip Kumar Dhal.
The elephants were from Bagdihi forest range under the Jharsuguda Forest division.
The incident caused disruption in the movement of trains in the section that comes under South-Eastern Railway.
Later, train services were smooth after the bodies were removed from the tracks.
Veterinary surgeons have reached the spot to conduct an autopsy on the bodies.
