The sports that won TV gold during the Commonwealth Games

Swimming was the undisputed king of television this past fortnight.

But Australians also have a love for classic athletics events; tuning in to watch our Commonwealth Games athletes spring, jump and vault their way to the finish line.

Opening ceremony aside, the women's 100-metre breaststroke final was the most-watched event of this year's Games. An estimated 2.36 million people tuned in to watch 21-year-old Georgia Bohl from the Australian swim team snap up bronze.

That's well above the average audience figures for top-rating shows like Seven's My Kitchen Rules and Nine's Married at First Sight.

Another women's sport also snapped up the title of the second most-watched sporting event of the Games, with 2.35 million people glued to the telly during the women's 50-metre backstroke semi-final.

And if you thought the average punter was obsessed with the men's 50-metre sprints, think again. The third most-watched event was the men's 50-metre breaststroke final, followed by the men's 1500-metre freestyle.

While swimming dominated Australian television screens, the men's decathlon final still managed to make the top 10.

An estimated 2.14 million people tuned in to watch the 10-part athletics event, which sees athletes compete in everything from long jump and javelin throwing. Australia's Cedric Dubler placed third in the mammoth two-day event.

Outside the top 10 events, women's events still rated highly. The triple jump final, four-person 100-metre relay and 10-kilometre race were all watched by more than 2 million people.
