Longmont High School's 35 winter percussion musicians are heading to Dayton, Ohio, on Tuesday to compete in a national drumline showdown.
The school's winter percussion group won its class for the fifth straight year Saturday at the Rocky Mountain Percussion Association's annual meet at the Air Force Academy.
Now, LHS drummers will try to beat out 66 other schools in their division at the World Guard International Percussion World Championships in Ohio.
"This weekend was great. We've had a really successful season. The kids are so in tune with things right now," said Dave Marvin, the school's winter percussion director.
The drummers will rehearse Wednesday before playing in a preliminary round Thursday. If LHS advances to Friday's semifinals, it would compete again that night if its score earns a top-15 finish to qualify for the final round.
Two years ago, LHS finished 17th after the preliminary round, falling just short of making it to the final.
"Making the finals is such an incredible achievement; beyond that, you're just lucky to be there," Marvin said.
