Members of Ladies of Harley with their bikes in Bhubaneswar on Sunday | Biswanath Swain

BHUBANESWAR: On a mission to prove that Indian highways are safe for women travellers, seven members of Ladies of Harley (LoH), an exclusive Harley Davidson chapter for women, arrived in the city on Saturday evening.

The women bikers were given a rousing welcome by members of Kalinga chapter of Harley Owners’ Group (HOG), the official riding club of the motorcycle manufacturer. Bhubaneswar is a pit stop for the women who plan to cover around 6,000 kms in 14 days as part of their Golden Quadilateral ride.  Golden Quadilateral is a network of highways connecting Chennai, Kolkata, Delhi and Mumbai. Interacting with the media on Sunday, chapter director of LoH Suneeta Kunjeer of Pune said the ride’s aim is to show the world that Indian roads are safe for women. “We also want to tell people that girls and women can and should ride motorcycles,” she said.

The ride also intends to spread the message of road safety among people, she added.   Kunjeer was accompanied by fellow bikers Shirley George, Krupa Reddy and Praveshika Katiyar, all from Bengaluru, besides Urvasi Desai of Ahemedabad, Smita Mande of Mumbai and Anushriya Gulati of Dehradun. All the bikers are the in age group of 23-48 years.  The Golden Quadilateral ride started on April 7 from Daman and will culminate at the same place on April 21 after covering cities of Udaipur, Delhi, Kanpur, Aurangabad, Kolkata, Bhubaneswar, Vijaywada, Chennai, Bengaluru, Kolhapur and Mumbai.
