MURADNAGAR. "Our Gauri has left us for heavenly abode. For peace of her soul, on April 15, we are organizing final day of her death’s mourning (tehravin ritual). Please come," read an invitation message from Devprakash
Sharma, who hails from
Kakra village.
Gauri was a
cow, who lived with Sharma’s family for 13 years. On Sunday, the Sharma family hosted a mourning feast (bhoj) to pay their last respects to Gauri. Invitation cards were distributed across the village. Roughly 1000 people attended the ritual, including MLA Ajitpal Tyagi.
Sharma had purchased Gauri in year 2004 by shelling Rs 2,000. Gauri passed away on March 31 this year after a poisonous snake bit her.
Sharma took out her funeral procession with loud music amidst huge fanfare. The funeral was attended by hordes of people close to Gauri.
All the attendees decided a unique way to pay their last rites to the cow. This was followed by a havan ceremony and lunch yesterday.
As per Sharma and veterinary doctors, Gauri was a special cow.
“She was one in a thousand. She gave birth to just one calf and kept giving 10-14 litres of milk daily without reproducing any more calves,” recalled Sharma.
Veterinary expert Dr
Rahul Aggarwal claimed that it sometimes happens when there is surge in hormones of a cow.
