A call for unity in diversity after Momberg's trial

16 April 2018, 12:06

A two-year jail sentence for Vicki Momberg was somewhat drastic. Rehabilitation through public service would most likely have shown more positive results, and be less disruptive for her family. However, Momberg has no excuse. We all know that words such as the k-word are considered hate speech and belong to the past.

My children, in their mid-twenties, have been brought up to address ALL adults as "tannie" or "oom", regardless of their race. It is wonderful to see ALL "tannies" and "ooms" responding very positively to this.

I therefore accept Vicki Momberg's severe sentence. The law must bring Momberg back to the correct path, where she will treat all South Africans with respect, and lead by example. However, and this is the reason for me writing this, this law must then be applied equally to ALL South Africans.

We really are the rainbow nation, and there is so much goodwill among whites, blacks, coloureds, Malay and Indians. We must nurture and treasure this diversity, and the goodwill between us.

I don't want to hear that I am white and therefore not welcome in my own country - from Julius Malema and the likes. By the way Julius, I'm white, and I do not own any property. It is still a dream, and I am working hard for it. So, when will Julius be doing his two-year correctional stint?
