A Schenectady man on Monday pleaded guilty to stealing guns from a Glenville firearms dealer, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Northern District of New York.
Jose Fontanez, 36, of Schenectady, admitted that on Oct. 22, 2017, he and a co-conspirator broke into Target Sports in Glenville while it was closed and stole more than 25 pistols, shotguns and rifles, and over the course of two days moved the stolen guns between various locations in Schenectady and Amsterdam, federal officials said. Eventually the stolen guns were taken to Rochester, officials said.
Fontanez also pleaded guilty to possessing, concealing and storing stolen firearms while being a convicted felon.
Fontanez is scheduled to be sentenced Aug. 15, and faces up to 10 years in prison on each count of conviction, for a total of 30 years. He also faces a maximum $750,000 fine and up to three years of post-imprisonment supervised release.
This case is being investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives, New York State Police and the Glenville Police Department, and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Wayne A. Myers and Joseph A. Giovannetti.
