Thane: Bio-mining to get rid of Uttan’s piled-up garbage

Bhayandar: At a time when the villagers from the coastal belt of Uttan have rolled up their sleeves to launch an unified agitation against the rampant dumping menace by sopping entry of garbage laden vans to Dhaavgi, the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC), in a desperate pacifying attempt has revealed a fresh plan to get rid of the piled-up garbage by switching over to a new technology.

In the latest assurance, the MBMC claims to have prepared a Detailed Project Report (DPR) after consultations from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) experts to adopt the bio-mining process for disposing the whooping 10 lakh metric tonnes of unprocessed waste that has accumulated over the past five years at the uphill dumping yard which according to locals was the reason behind unbearable stench and health hazard, this apart from an adverse impact on the environment owing to its faulty geographical location.

Having a price tag of Rs.56.20 crore, the DPR will be tabled before the general body house for an official nod on April 18, following which it will be sent to the state government authorities for approval and simultaneous allocation of government funds to implement the project at the earliest.

While the BJP-led governance claim that the new technology is a zero-emission process which is much more efficient and the land would almost return to its original form, Congress corporator Anil Sawant terms the move as yet another calculated ploy to ensure that the waste process plant remains at the same position, despite stiff resistance from villagers coupled by judicial directions to move the plant to Sakvar (Vasai) within a prescribed time frame, which has already lapsed.
