TRN Top 10 Poll
Each week the TRN will rank the top 10 softball teams in the area. These rankings are more relative to where a team ranks in its respective district and region. However, unlike in football, it's more likely teams play each other regardless of classification so potential head-to-head matchups are weighed more significantly. Record and previous ranking is in parenthesis.
1. Graham (18-7, 1) — The Lady Blues dropped a non-district game to potential Region I-4A playoff opponent Abilene Wylie, but remain undefeated in District 6-4A. They meet Vernon for a shot at an outright district title Friday.
2. Vernon (14-2, 2) — It's a big week for the Lady Lions. They draw Burkburnett on Tuesday and Graham on Friday. The Lady Blues are responsible for one of Vernon's two losses this season.
3. Windthorst (17-9, 3) — The Trojanettes got two huge victories last week and have all but claimed an outright District 8-2A championship.
4. Henrietta (13-9, 6) — The Lady Cats' ascension up the District 8-3A ranks continue as they are now tied with Paradise for first place. They're the hottest team in 8-3A and have to be considered the district favorites at this point.
5. Burkburnett (17-9, 5) — The Lady Bulldogs are almost entrenched into the No. 3 seed. They're only chance of changing that is by beating Vernon on Tuesday.
6. Petrolia (19-9, 4) — It was stunning to see the Lady Pirates' loaded lineup silenced by Windthorst pitcher Laynie Brown. Petrolia will have to look to exact revenge on the rival Trojanettes in the postseason now. And the odds are good they'll get that opportunity.
7. Archer City (14-8, NR) — Make no mistake about it, the Lady Cats can still put an abundance of runs on the board. This team can make a nice playoff run from the No. 3 seed in District 8-2A. And be sure Petrolia is taking Archer City seriously in Friday's regular season finale.
8. Holliday (12-14, NR) — Holliday seems to have City View's number. The Lady Eagles completed the season sweep with a shocking run-rule victory Friday. They were backed into a corner, needing a win, and came out punching.
9. City View (16-7, 7) — City View is tied for third with Boyd in 8-3A, but must regroup from that untimely loss to Holliday. It won't be easy. The Lady Mustangs finish with co-district leader Paradise (Tuesday) and Boyd (Friday).
10. WFHS (11-14, 10) — The Lady Coyotes have lost three straight, but are still clinging to fourth place with a full-game lead on Braswell. They finish the regular season Tuesday against Sherman. A win doesn't clinch anything, but would greatly improve their playoff chances.
Honor Roll
Bree Zellers, Holliday — Zellers leads the Lady Eagles with 32 RBIs this season, including four in Friday's big win against City View. Zellers finished that game 4 for 4 and went 5 for 6 in two game last week with two doubles, five RBIs and two runs.
Erika Guerra, Archer City — Guerra had a productive week at the plate, going a combined 5 for 7 with four runs and two RBIs.
Laynie Brown, Windthorst — The sophomore pitcher had the biggest performance of her career when she threw a one-hit shutout against a loaded Petrolia lineup, striking out eight batters. It's her second win of the season against the Lady Pirates.
Abby Brown, Windthorst — While one Brown shined in the circle Friday, another ruled the day at the plate. This Brown went 3 for 3 with two home runs and a double, driving in three runs. She was also 2 for 3 with two runs and a RBI in last Tuesday's win against rival Archer City.
Emily Southerland, Graham — Southerland shut down Burkburnett's bats last Tuesday, holding the Lady Bulldogs to one run on two hits, while striking out eight. She also hit a three-run double.
Tuesday's Games to Watch
Softball
WFHS at Sherman — As previously mentioned, the Lady Coyotes are clinging the fourth and final playoff spot available in the district. Strangely enough, a .500 record, which Old High can claim with a win Tuesday, could be enough for the No. 2 seed in this district.
Vernon at Burkburnett — Vernon is hoping to keep pace with Graham and have a shot at a share of the District 6-4A title Friday. First, the Lady Lions must get past Burkburnett, which it beat 4-1 on March 30.
Holliday at Henrietta — The Lady Eagles surprised a surging City View squad Friday, but now draws the hottest team in District 8-3A. A loss couple potentially end their playoff hopes. Henrietta is striving toward a district title.
Paradise at City View — The Lady Mustangs still have district title aspirations, but need to upset co-district leader Paradise. Henrietta is cheering for City View to do just that.
Baseball
Braswell at Rider — The Bengals lead District 5-5A entering Monday, but play their second game in as many days Tuesday. Rider is tied for fourth and on a three-game losing streak.
Vernon at Burkburnett — The Lions shocked the Bulldogs with a comeback victory in the first meeting. Burk has a half-game lead on Vernon for the No. 2 seed.
Bowie at Jacksboro — This is the only matchup in 8-3A between two teams currently in the top four. The Tigers are tied for second, while Bowie is two games back tied for fourth.
Archer City at Quanah — Quanah is coming off a big win against Seymour, but is hoping to step up a level to play with the Wildcats who are tied for first with Windthorst. Archer City won the first meeting, 9-5.
