Match 13, Eden Gardens, Kolkata 16 April, 2018

Live Now : Toss won by Delhi Daredevils (decided to bowl)

Highlights

20:38(IST)

SIX! Nitish Rana's time to get in the action now, gets underneath a ball from Tewatia, goes down on one knee and hits the ball into the crowd. KKR really need a strong flow of runs here, KKR are 71/2 after 9 overs. Its also time for the strategic timeout

20:33(IST)

WICKET! Nadeem strikes, in his third over - and kudos to Gambhir for persisting with the off-spinner, Uthappa again gets a top edge but isn't as lucky this time as the ball goes high in the air and Nadeem completes a simple catch. KKR 62/2 after 7.3 overs.

20:31(IST)

Uthappa has a lucky escape right after hitting a humongous six! He sweeps one for maximum but can only get a top edge on the next one which falls in between the two fielders. KKR are 60/1 after 7 overs.

20:27(IST)

Excellent over for KKR as Nadeem bears the brunt, Uthappa at his best with a couple of humongous sixes and also picking up a boundary. 18 runs coming off the over and 50 is up for KKR, they are 50/1 after 6 overs.

20:24(IST)

Lynn finally goes after Boult and successfully so, 13 runs come off that over which includes three straight boundaries. The last one a bit unlucky as Morris does a misfield and it goes for a boundary. KKR get a move on. KKR 32/1 after 5 overs.

20:19(IST)

KKR haven't gotten off to the best of starts here, Nadeem comes into the attack for Delhi and he concedes just 7 runs from the over including a boundary. KKR move to 19/1 after 4 overs. Lynn meanwhile seems to be only dealing in boundaries!

20:16(IST)

Boult concedes a boundary off the last ball which spoils the over a bit, he concedes 5 runs from the over. Meanwhile, Robin Uthappa has joined Lynn out in the middle. KKR 12/1 after 3 overs.

20:12(IST)

WICKET! Boult strikes and deservedly so, he has been sensational so far. Narine can only nick that one and Pant gets a glove to it before Maxwell shows great awareness to cling onto the ball! Early wicket for Delhi, Narine departs for 1, KKR 7/1

20:08(IST)

SIX! Chris Lynn huffs and puffs, but finally connects with one. Once he connects, they usually stay hit and that's the case with this one, it goes all the way for a maximum. KKR 7/0 after 2 overs.

20:04(IST)

Excellent start from Trent Boult, a couple of swings and misses from Lynn but not a run conceded. Boult has the first maiden of this year's IPL! And that too in front of Chris Lynn, who would have though. KKR 0/0 after 1 over.

20:00(IST)

So, we have the answer to our first query now. Sunil Naraine has joined Chris Lynn in the middle..the two will certainly go big from ball 1, let the game begin then!

19:53(IST)

Daredevils meanwhile will be looking to sort out their bowling, on paper they have one of the most feared bowling line-ups but it hasn't exactly gone as per plan so far. Trent Boult will be looking to get the ball to move in Eden Gardens, a track which should assist the pacers.

19:48(IST)

It will be interesting to see who opens for Kolkata now, Will Naraine move back to the top? or will we see Uthappa continuing to open with Lynn? ..

19:42(IST)

Dinesh Karthik: All teams seem to be chasing. It gives us an opportunity to put runs on the board. We all expect that from ourselves - bat better. Batting with intent is something what we we'll look to do. Just one change. Tom Curran comes in for Mitchell Johnson.

19:40(IST)

Gautam Gambhir at the toss: We will bowl first. Looks like a good track. Won't change much. The wicket has changed (compared to last year), if anything, it will be good to bat. Obviously an emotional moment. Will try to control it. They (KKR) have got the most loyal fans. Wouldn't have achieved whatever we could without their support. We know how destructive he (Roy) can be. This wicket will suit him as well. This is one of the best wickets in the country after Wankhede. We have one change. Chris Morris comes in place of Dan Christian.

19:35(IST)

Karthik: All teams seem to be chasing. Just one change. Tom Curran comes in for Mitchell Johnson.

19:34(IST)

19:22(IST)

It is a fresh season, but Delhi Daredevils have once again failed to change their fortunes in the Indian Premier League as they have lost both their games in the 11th edition of the cash-rich league. But the franchise has tried to put up a brave face in front of the fans as they called their defeat to Rajasthan Royals on Wednesday as a ‘tough night’ and said they were looking to focus on their next game in the championship, against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday. Taking to Twitter, DD wrote: “Let's put a tough night behind us and focus on the next game. Teamwork will take us in the right direction! #DilDilli #Dhadkega” Rajasthan Royals beat Delhi Daredevils by 10 runs in a rain-marred clash at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium in Jaipur in the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), on Wednesday. Delhi were set a revised target of 71 in 6 overs after Rajasthan managed to score 153/5 in 17.5 overs before rain halted their innings. Hard-hitters Glenn Maxwell and Colin Munro were handed the task of chasing down the target by the Delhi think-tank. However, Delhi got off to the worst start possible as Munro was run-out by wicket-keeper Jos Buttler on the first ball of the innings itself. Munro joined Adam Gilchrist as being the only two batsmen to be run-out on the first ball in the cash-rich league.

19:14(IST)

Jason Roy smashed an unbeaten 91 as Delhi Daredevils defeated hosts Mumbai Indians by seven wickets in a last-ball thriller in the Indian Premier League. Opener Roy made a mockery of a listless Mumbai Indians bowling attack as he hammered six fours and as many sixes in his 53 ball knock to help Delhi overhaul the home team's 194/7 for their first win of the season. It was the third successive loss for MI and they remain without a point after three matches. With 11 needed in the final over, Englishman Roy hammered Mustifizur Rahman for four and a six, before playing out three dot balls. Delhi needed one-run off the final ball and Roy connected it and completed the run to ensure that his side won, with Shreyas Iyer (27 not out) at the other end. Roy and skipper Gautam Gambhir conjured up a 50-run stand for the first wicket. Roy made his intentions clear hitting a four off Hardik Pandya. He then smashed a towering six and a four off Akila Dhananjaya as Delhi raced to 23/0 in two overs. Hardik Pandya conceded 21 runs in his second over as Roy hammered him for two consecutive sixes over long on and square-leg respectively and followed it with a four. But Gambhir (15), failed to convert his start, as he gave a sitter to Rohit Sharma off Rahman. Leggie Mayank Markanade was taken to task by Roy and one down Rishabh Pant (47 off 25 balls), who also played his role to perfection. Pant did not spare Dhananjaya, hitting him for two sixes and a four as Delhi grabbed 19 runs of the 10th over. But Kieron Pollard brought MI back into the game with a stunning diving catch at long-off as Pant went back to the pavilion with the visitors at 119/2. Glenn Maxwell's (13) stay at the crease was cut short with Hardik taking a stunning catch. Iyer and Roy ensured that there was no further damage and finally took their side home.

19:04(IST)

Jason Roy and Rishabh Pant played an integral part as Delhi Daredevils registered their first win of the 11th edition of the Indian Premier League at the Wankhede Stadium against Mumbai Indians on Saturday and the Daredevils have promised their fans that this is just the beginning and there are more thrilling performances on the cards from the Delhi outfit. Taking to Twitter, the Daredevils said: “That was win number one. It isn't going to stop there. Lots more to come from these lads! 💪🏻 #DilDilli #Dhadkega #MIvDD” Jason Roy smashed an unbeaten 91 as Delhi Daredevils defeated hosts Mumbai Indians by seven wickets in a last-ball thriller in the Indian Premier League. Glenn Maxwell's (13) stay at the crease was cut short with Hardik taking a stunning catch. Iyer and Roy ensured that there was no further damage and finally took their side home. Earlier, Mumbai Indians batting finally clicked with Suryakumar Yadav leading the way with a whirlwind fifty as the defending champions posted a formidable score. After being put to bat, the strategy of opening the inning with Yadav, instead of captain Rohit Sharma, and Evin Lewis worked wonderfully well, as they gave MI a flying start with a 102-run-stand. After Yadav (53 off 32 balls) and Lewis (48 off 28 balls) posted the century stand, their good work was continued by Ishan Kishan (44 off 23 balls). But the latter order batsmen failed to sustain the tempo and the total fell well below what the openers had promised. Yadav and Lewis made their intentions clear by smashing a four each in the first over off Trent Boult. They brutally punished Boult as 15 runs came in his second over, with Yadav hitting two fours and Lewis striking his first six. Yadav then welcomed Mohammed Shami with a six and followed it with two fours as he made a mockery of the listless Delhi attack. MI raced to 84/0 after the powerplay, their highest score in IPL history in the first six overs. But soon after that, Rahul Tewatia applied the brakes and send Lewis back, who was caught by Jason Roy at mid-off. Lewis smashed four fours and as many sixes. Tewatia then trapped Surya in front of the wicket as Mumbai lost two quick wickets. Surya, who hit seven fours and a six, unsuccessfully reviewed the decision. But Mumbai lost Rohit (18), Krunal Pandya (11) and Hardik Pandya (2) in quick succession, as Delhi bowlers made a strong comeback in middle and death overs.

18:58(IST)

In a major blow to Kolkata Knight Riders, young fast bowler Kamlesh Nagarkoti has been ruled out of the IPL due to a foot injury. Nagarkoti had injured himself before the tournament but KKR felt that he would recover in time. They had called Karnataka pacer Prasidh Krishna as back-up and he will now replace Nagarkoti. Prasidh, made his first-class debut for Karnataka in 2015, picking up a five-for against the Bangladesh A. While that remains his only first-class fixture, the right-arm pacer has gone on to feature in 19 List A games, picking up 33 wickets. He was also a part of Karnataka's campaign in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. KKR had invested heavily in young Nagarkoti, who had a fantastic run in the U-19 World Cup where India had emerged as winners. He was picked up by KKR for a whopping Rs 3.2 crore. The Knight Riders had already received a big blow before the tournament when spearhead Mitchell Starc was ruled out of the tournament due to an injury. Nagarkoti's absence will only put more pressure on the already thin pace bowling department of the team. All eyes will now be on Nagarkoti's pace partner in the U-19 World Cup - Shivam Mavi and England pacer Tom Curran to step up to the plate.

18:47(IST)

Two-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Saturday roped in Mumbai all-rounder Abhishek Nayar to be part of its support staff for the ongoing season. On a day when U-19 pacer Kamlesh Nagarkoti was ruled out for the season with a foot injury and replaced by Karnataka fast bowler Prasidh Krishna, KKR added to their off-field support by bringing in Nayar with head coach Jacques Kallis, assistant coach Simon Katich, bowling coach Heath Streak, Andrew Leipus - the physiotherapist, Adrian Le Roux - the physical trainer and AR Srikanth - Data and Video analyst. Nayar is close to KKR skipper Dinesh Karthik and helped him during his lean patch some time back. "I want to play as long as (possible for India). It was hard a lot of times. I had a lot of doubt whether I will ever play for the country again," Karthik had told the media after his tri-series winning unbeaten 8-ball 29 cameo that helped India beat Bangladesh in Sri Lanka. "That is where I have been lucky to meet Abhishek (Nayar). He is kind of guiding me through the process. I was not sure, where do I need to go and he (Nayar) kind of showed me light at the end of tunnel, things have been touch wood, good and I have been lucky", Karthik had further stated. Nayar's exact role is yet to be identified, said KKR insiders.

18:38(IST)

Smarting from their defeat against Royal Challengers Bangalore, KKR made three changes to their team and gave maiden IPL caps to Under-19 World Cup winning duo of Shubman Gill and Shivam Mavi against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Eden Gardens on Saturday. But none of them could make an impact, thanks to some seemingly flawed strategy that saw a top-order batsman like Gill bat at No. 7, while pacer Mavi came to bowl only in the 15th over when the target had been reduced to 37 runs from 36 balls. KKR skipper Dinesh Karthik, however, said there was nothing wrong in their strategy. "Look, as a team we understand he is a top order batsman. But you got to understand the dynamics of the team as well," Karthik said of Gill. "With Robin (Uthappa), Nitish (Rana) and myself there, we thought we'll send him in a middle order role where he doesn't need to go and build an innings and just express himself. It is going to be a little hard at this stage to send him to bat higher up the order. He is happy to bat at this spot where he did." On Mavi not bowling in the Powerplay, he said: "At that stage the spinners were bowling so well I could see they were a better wicket-taking option than the fast bowlers. It was coming on to the bat a lot better but for the spinners it was holding up and the chance of a wicket (was more) so I was trying to utilise that." KKR's move to bring an in-form opener Sunil Narine down the order also did not work and Karthik said they would not be opening with him throughout the season. "It's a bit of a mix and match. We decided to start off the season, we won't be sending Sunil to open throughout. At times we want to use him as a floater. They have a couple of good spinners so we had that as a plan and we used it," the KKR skipper said. He said KKR would hope to avoid a third loss on the trot when they take on a resurgent Delhi Daredevils on Monday. Counting on the positives, Karthik said: "I think the spinners bowled beautifully. After the CSK game, the way they have come back, all three bowled well for us so I am very happy with way the spinners bowled."

18:27(IST)

As Delhi Daredevils gear up to play Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens, former KKR skipper Gautam Gambhir turned nostalgic as he reached Kolkata for the game. Even as he walked out of the airport, Gambhir was welcomed with calls of ‘Gautam Da’ in stark contrast to the North Indian style of ‘Gauti paaji’. Taking to Twitter, Gambhir posted a video which read: “The air smells familiar, faces look friendly, from ‘Gauti paaji’ all of a sudden I’ve become ‘Gautam Da’.....am I at my erstwhile home? @DelhiDaredevils @ipl @bcci #DilDilli #Dhadkega.” Kolkata skipper Dinesh Karthik will face a big test when a struggling KKR lock horns with a resurgent Delhi Daredevils, led by double title winning former KKR skipper Gambhir. After back-to-back defeats, Karthik-led KKR will be desperate for a revival, while Delhi will hope to continue their momentum after snapping a two-match losing streak in style against Mumbai Indians. Kolkata had made a winning start to their campaign against Royals Challenger Bangalore but successive defeats to Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad in the next two matches have put them in a spot of bother. Delhi, on the other hand, lost to Kings XI Punjab in their opener and then went down against Rajasthan Royals in a rain-hit match. But the Gambhir-led side bounced back in style against Mumbai with Jason Roy smashing an unbeaten 91 in his debut match for DD. DD's Kolkata leg fixture means their Team India speedster Mohammed Shami is all set to return to his home town for the first time after his wife had accused him of infidelity and domestic abuse last month a controversy that had hogged the headlines. In the latest development, Jahan has filed a case at Alipore court on April 10 and Shami has been summoned within 15 days.

18:22(IST)

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will not be focusing on Gautam Gambhir alone when their most successful former captain leads Delhi Daredevils (DD) at the Eden Gardens in a big-ticket Indian Premier League (IPL) game here on Monday, assistant coach Simon Katich said. "I think from our point of view, it's about performing well against the opposition. If you start playing the man rather than the ball, you know you are in trouble in this game," Katich told reporters on the eve of the game. "There are a lot of new faces in the team. There are guys who have joined from other teams, some youngsters so it's not the exact same team that played under Gautam for so many years. Yes there will be emotions involved from I guess Gautam's point of view because he had a fantastic time here as captain and was very successful. We know he will be up for the challenge as three of the Sunrisers boys were last night (Manish Pandey, Yusuf Pathan, Shakib Al Hasan)," Katich added. Gambhir led KKR to two IPL triumphs in 2012 and 2014 and is their all-time highest scorer. "Gautam knows our team inside out. He will know the wicket and conditions really well. He knows about a lot of players who have been here for a long time," Katich added. On Saturday, KKR succumbed to their second straight defeat at the hands of SRH by five wickets. Delhi meanwhile tasted their first win of the season after three games against Mumbai Indians. "In the last couple of games, things have not gone according to plan with both bat and ball, particularly in the back end. Last night here in Kolkata, we were obviously 25-30 runs short with the bat and that put us under pressure with the ball. I thought the spinners last night were outstanding. To be fair to the batsmen yesterday, the rain breaks kept happening, we never got any momentum in our innings. I think from a batting point of view, our batsmen have all looked really good at the start of the tournament," Katich assessed. Put in to bat, KKR were 52/1 when rain halted play for almost an hour. The SRH bowlers led by Bhuvneshwar Kumar then turned the tables on the hosts as they were restricted to 138/8 in 20 overs. Chasing a modest 139, SRH struggled against the KKR spinners but Kane Williamson played a captain's knock of 50 to guide them over the line. Katich backed under-fire KKR skipper Dinesh Karthik whose decision to send top-order batsman Shubman Gill at No.7 and giving Shivam Mavi -- both U-19 World Cup winners -- the ball in the 15th over raised eyebrows. "He has been really good so far. Things haven't quite gone to plan. But in terms of how he settled in, he is getting around the group. We have a lot of youngsters. So he is spending a lot of time chatting with youngsters. From a performance point of view, he would have liked to get the team home a couple of times. He was trying last night, did not quite go to plan. The effort is there. His keeping has been excellent."

18:11(IST)

Gautam Gambhir was picked by Delhi Daredevils for Rs 2.80 Cr in the IPL Auctions earlier this year. The southpaw batsman returned to Delhi after spending seven years at Kolkata Knight Riders, and led them to title wins in 2012 and 2014. He has been mighty successful as a leader and batsman both in his IPL career. In the tournament so far, he has scored 4,202 runs in 151 matches, at an average of 31.83. The Delhi batsman has a great record at Eden Gardens, and come the match against Kolkata Knight Riders he will have another opportunity to better his record. Till now in the 46 matches he has played at this venue, he has scored 1399 runs, which is the most by any batsman at this venue. Not only that, Gambhir has scored 11 fifties here, the most by any batsman at this venue. The second on the list is Robin Uthappa with seven fifties. Gambhir's strike rate at Eden is of 127.53 which is the third highest at this venue. This strike rate is better than his overall IPL strike rate of 124.54. In their last match, Delhi registered a comfortable seven-wicket win over Mumbai Indians. Jason Roy smashed an unbeaten 91 as Delhi Daredevils defeated hosts Mumbai Indians by seven wickets in a last-ball thriller in the Indian Premier League. Opener Jason Roy made a mockery of a listless Mumbai Indians bowling attack as he hammered six fours and as many sixes in his 53 ball knock to help Delhi overhaul the home team's 194/7 for their first win of the season.

Hello and the welcome to the LIVE coverage of the game between Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Daredevils. Not in fine fettle after facing two successive defeats, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will be forced to go down memory lane when they welcome their most successful captain Gautam Gambhir, who is now in charge of Delhi Daredevils (DD), in an Indian Premier League (IPL) game between the two teams here at the Eden Gardens on Monday. Gambhir helped KKR win titles in 2012 and 2014 before jumping ship to his hometown franchise Daredevils this year. The captaincy mantle was handed over to Dinesh Karthik, who has so far looked out of sorts in the opening two games, where KKR finished second best to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), respectively. While their five-wicket defeat to Mahendra Singh Dhoni's CSK in a nail-biting game was more down to misfortune, SRH rolled over the purple brigade with bat and ball barring the 12 overs from KKR's spinners which made the modest chase of 139 look difficult. As Karthik rightly pointed out at the post-match press conference on Saturday, KKR's strength lies in their three-pronged spin attack led by mystery spinner Sunil Narine and also has celebrated chinaman Kuldeep Yadav and veteran leggie Piyush Chawla. Narine was exceptional against SRH on Saturday, conceding just 17 runs in four overs and also taking the timely wickets of Wriddhiman Saha, who looked good for his 15-ball 24 and in-form Shikhar Dhawan (7). Kuldeep and Chawla also kept it tight as their pacer bowlers kept leaking runs. KKR's worry has been their team composition as well, a feature laid bare on Saturday. Dropping the horribly out-of-form Vinay Kumar, Rinku Singh and Tom Curran, KKR went in with Under-19 World Cup winners Shubman Gill and Shivam Mavi, top order batsman and pacer respectively. But while Gill, who bats at No.3, was sent in to bat after Narine at No.7, Mavi was handed the ball in the 15th over. Gill looked a fish out of water, huffing and puffing to three runs of nine balls before Bhuvneshwar Kumar got his back while Mavi was hit for 10 runs in his only over. The opening slot with Chris Lynn is also an uncertainty with Sunil Narine not coming out with the Australian on Saturday and Uthappa filling in that role, for only the second time since the end of the 2016 season. KKR's pace battery has also been poor, giving away a lot of runs and lacking fire power or variety up front. Gambhir, who knows the team like the back of his hand, will lead a Delhi side brimming with confidence after a thrilling seven-wicket win over Mumbai Indians on Saturday in Mumbai. After losing to Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals in the first two games, England opener Jason Roy led Delhi's charge with an unbeaten 53-ball 91 and he was ably supported by Rishabh Pant, who smashed a 25-ball 47. Delhi have issues to address especially in their bowling department which has failed to deliver in each of the three games played so far. Talking of bowlers, local boy Mohammed Shami will be returning to the city for the first time after accusations of abusing and cheating his wife Hasin Jahan surfaced last month. In the latest development, Jahan has filed a case at Alipore court on April 10 and Shami has been summoned within 15 days. Shami has turned out in all the three matches for DD and a team official said there's no question of his availability as it remains to be seen where there's also a court room battle in the offing. In the head-to-head count, KKR lead by 12-8 but the hosts will be up against it on Monday, looking to comeback to get their house in order.

Shami has turned out in all the three matches for DD and a team official said there's no question of his availability. On the field, it will be Gambhir who will have the upper hand despite DD's poor 8-12 head-to-head record against KKR. Gambhir, who was associated with KKR since 2011, has better knowledge of the conditions and he will be keen to make a point against his former franchise, who did not retain him this year. Included in the DD side at the expense of Colin Munro, Roy showed his prowess with a sizzling display as the Englishmen smashed his career best T20 score to pull off a tricky last ball victory. Gambhir can heave a sigh of relief after their batting combination clicked following some experimentation in the first two matches. He too would like to score some runs against his former franchise. As DD look to climb up the table, KKR will be keen to arrest their slide and they will have to do a lot of soul-searching first and foremost would be to get their batting organised. Bringing in-form Sunil Narine down the order did not help their cause and he might be back at his opening slot. KKR also need to back the Under-19 World Cup winning duo of Shubman Gill and Shivam Mavi. The youngster duo didn't get enough time in the middle to prove themselves as Gill, primarily a No 3 batsman, came only at No 7, while Mavi's raw pace and energy were left untested as he was not introduced during the Powerplay. Karthik would also hope that his deputy Robin Uthappa, who is a KKR veteran, shoulders more responsibility with the bat as his scores of 13, 29 and 3 have been a big letdown. Asked to open, Uthappa looked clueless particularly against Bhuvneshwar Kumar and it remains to be seen whether he would open again with DD boasting pace duo of Trent Boult and Shami up front.
