A two-engine aircraft crashed Sunday night near Saddle Hollow near Crozet.
Virginia State Police responded to a call at 9:03 p.m. about a downed plane.
The plane, which was located in a field, is a small, private aircraft and one body has been recovered from the wreckage, according to a press release. The remains will be transferred to the Office of the Medical Examiner for autopsy, examination and positive identification.
Multiple fire and EMT crews were on hand. The crash happened shortly after an area tornado warning was lifted.
The plane, a 1996 fixed-wing, twin-engine Cessna, had one occupant, state police said.
First responders reported "extensive debris field" around the crash and a fire burning near the top of the debris field, according to radio traffic.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation at this time, according to state police. The FAA and NTSB have both been notified of the crash.
The crash site is on private property, so media were not allowed access to the scene.
The crash occurred in the vicinity of the 1959 crash of Piedmont flight 349, which killed 26 people and had a single survivor. The local Mint Springs Park houses a memorial to that deadly incident.
This report will be updated as more information is released.
