Sailor drowns after yacht capsizes off Brighton

A sailor has drowned after the yacht which he was sailing capsized in Port Phillip Bay.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said it was believed the man was participating in a yacht race when the boat overturned just offshore from Brighton about 12.30pm on Sunday.

The man – who is yet to be formally identified – was pulled from the water and taken to the Royal Brighton Yacht Club by boat.

CPR was attempted en route and paramedics tried unsuccessfully to treat the man.

Police will prepare a report for the Coroner.
