Two planes have collided in midair in Germany, leaving several dead

The horror crash took place near Schwabisch Hall Airport, also known as Adolf Wurth airport, aviation monitors AirLive reported this evening.

The collision involved “two small private aircraft” and has left at least two dead. The death toll could rise, investigators have warned.

Local media has speculated one of the pilots was “blinded by the low sun” as they approached the airport to land.

Newspaper BILD said one of the planes was “torn to shreds”.

Rescuers were unable to approach the crash site for several hours due to fears the planes’ ejector seats could suddenly trigger and injure a member of the emergency crews.

The crash took place around 35 miles from the city of Stuttgart

The crash occurred at around 4.15pm local time (3.15pm BST).

The identities of the victims have not yet been confirmed.

Six fire engines and 20 emergency personnel are at the scene.

A police spokesman said: “They were approaching [the airport], I can not say anything more.”
