Police arrest son for mother's 'murder' in Ludhiana

LUDHIANA: Police have booked a person for allegedly killing his elderly mother after she refused to give him meal as he would return home late in drunken condition. The accused was identified as 22-year-old Vikas Pradhan, of Prem Vihar on Tibba road, originally from Orissa, who works in a hosiery factory.
Police officials said that Vikas and seventy year old mother Kanchan Devi were living in the city for last few years. They added that whereas three of Vikas’s sisters are married, he is unmarried and his mother would cook food for his son and would also wash his clothes.

Cops said that as the accused had drinking habit and used to return home late, his mother would refuse to give him meals after which he would fight with her. They added that on Friday the accused as usual reached home late and that too in drunken condition after which his mother asked him the reason for the same and raised the pitch.

Police officials said that the accused then pulled up the Sari of his mother and plugged her nose and mouth with it. They added that after Kanchan died of suffocation, the accused then created a drama and called his relatives telling them that she had died after illness. Jodhewal police had initiated inquest proceedings under section 174 of CRPC after getting post mortem of the deceased done from civil hospital.

However on the statement of Mukesh Singh of New Shakti Vihar, son in law of the deceased, registered a case of murder against the accused. The complaint in his statement to police said that on Friday he got a call that his mother in law has died and later came to know that because of the fight, the accused closed his nose and mouth with a side of Sari and killed her.

Station House Officer (SHO) Jodhewal Police station, Inspector Muhammad Jameel said that the son in law of the deceased told them that the accused would frequently fight with his mother for returning home being drunk. He added that the accused was arrested and is being produced in the court for securing remand to dole out more information about the incident.
