Extra high voltage substation inside city gets govt nod

Nagpur: After a wait of two years, the state energy ministry has finally sanctioned the underground cable to charge the 132 KV Jattarodi substation of Mahatransco.
A 10km long cable will be laid from 132 KV Pardi substation to the under-construction Jattarodi substation. This will help the Nagpur Metro project as the Jattarodi substation will supply power to a Metro traction substation.

Stressing on the importance of Jattarodi substation, an MSEDCL officer said, “It will greatly reduce the number of major breakdowns in the city. The new Transco substation will be connected to all our 33 KV substations in the central part of the city. Presently, these substations get supply from Pardi, Besa, Hingna, Uppalwadi and Mankapur substations which are all outside the city. Jattarodi will be the first extra high voltage (EHV) substation inside the city.”

The official, however, rued that work on Jattarodi substation was progressing at a slow pace. “Transco had awarded the contract and work had started but it has stopped due to some reason. We are facing problem due to non-commissioning of this substation,” he said.

Mahatransco chief engineer Vikas Bade could not be contacted for his comments despite repeated attempts.

The proposal to construct EHV substations at Jattarodi and Shankar Nagar had been mooted way back in 2001. Since then, they had been gathering dust. Mahatransco has included the Shankar Nagar substation in its infra plan for 2019-20. It will come up on land belonging to Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers (RCF).

The ministry has also cleared linking of Nagpur Metro traction substations with Mahatransco’s EHV substations. A 6km long cable will be laid from 132 KV Mankapur substation of Mahatransco to 132 KV railway traction substation at Zero Mile. A 1.5km 132 KV cable will be laid from Zero Mile substation to 132 KV traction substation on Morris College ground. This substation will be then connected to Mahatransco’s Jattarodi substation by a 2km long cable.

Several other projects have been sanctioned in Vidarbha. These include construction of a 220 KV substation at Nagbhid in Chandrapur district. A double circuit cable will be laid on Ambazari-Amravati link near Bazargaon substation.
