Thousands of homes in Mt. Pleasant and to the south were without power Sunday as ice and wind continued to hit mid-Michigan.
The National Weather Service extended a warning until at least 10 p.m. Sunday for a wintry storm that made travel difficult or impossible across a large stretch of the state.
Precipitation including additional snow and sleet accumulations of up to one inch and ice accumulations of four tenths to one half of an inch contributed to a flood advisory for the Chippewa River as well.
Nearly 10,000 customers in central Michigan experienced power outages throughout the afternoon, including all of Mt. Pleasant west of Mission Street, and stretching beyond the city limits according to the Consumers Energy power outage map.
Outage areas reached west past Winn Road, to the north nearly to River Road and south of Shepherd in Isabella County and into Gratiot County.
Crews assigned to the area were able to restore power in segments through the day Sunday though many outages were still reported late afternoon.
The storm is expected to bring multiple outages through the weekend.
“Power outages and tree damage are expected due to the ice. Travel will be impossible. Tree branches could fall. Expect significant reductions in visibility at times,” the National Weather service warned.
Meanwhile the Chippewa River water levels reached just over 6 feet Sunday, which is considered “bankfull stage.”
River levels at this point cause minor flooding of low lying areas adjacent to the river including portions of the Mt. Pleasant Country Club Golf Course, according to the flood advisory.
The weekend storm is expected to continue into Monday.
The NWS forecast calls for a chance of showers on Monday with the possibility of snow in the evening. The high temperature will be 40 degrees with a low of 28.
Tuesday’s forecast calls for mostly cloudy with a high of 40 and a low of 27.
Rain showers are likely to move back into the area on Wednesday, with high temperatures around 48 degrees, according to the NWS.
Showers could continue into Thursday with a high of 46 degrees.
High temperatures of 49 degrees on Friday with mostly sunny skies are in the forecast.
More sun is expected on Saturday with a high of 53 degrees.
