Police responded to a single-car crash Saturday evening south of Bear, after a 49-year-old of Newark fatally struck a roundabout.

The crash occurred around 5:50 p.m. as Thomas J. Miller was driving a Harley Davidson on Howell School Road approaching the area of Robert C. Peoples Boulevard, said Sgt. Richard Bratz of Delaware State Police.

Miller was in the roundabout at the intersection when his bike struck the concrete curb in the center, Bratz said.

The bike fell down onto its right side, and Miller was ejected from the seat and off the road onto a yard on Howell School Road.

Miller, who was not wearing a helmet, was taken to Christiana Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:20 p.m.

Police are unsure if impairment was a factor, Bratz said.

The roundabout was built last year as an effort to reduce speeding on the road.

The scene remains under investigation, but the area of the crash was not closed.
