Women's FA Cup: Kirby double fires Chelsea into the final

Chelsea kept their bid for a treble alive, and ended rivals Manchester City's in the process, with a deserved Women's FA Cup semi-final victory.

Fran Kirby's brace sent Chelsea through to face Arsenal in 5 May's Wembley final, after the Gunners beat Everton.

The in-form forward took advantage when England captain Steph Houghton misjudged a long ball early on.

Kirby also raced clear and calmly slotted home after Jen Beattie's similar error in the second half.

Holders City disappointed going forward but ultimately it was centre-halves Houghton and Beattie's uncharacteristic errors from high, route-one balls that saw their reign end.

Kirby latched on to both situations clinically and showed her class with two calm finishes, sending her side in to their third FA Cup final in four seasons, and fourth since 2012.

For Women's Super League One leaders Chelsea, victory kept them on course for a league, FA Cup and European treble, ahead of April's two-legged Women's Champions League semi-final against German club Wolfsburg.

Man City, who are three points behind Chelsea in WSL 1 with a game in hand, were left to focus on the title race and their European bid, with holders Lyon awaiting the Citizens in the last four of the Champions League.

Arsenal had beaten Everton earlier on Sunday, setting up a London derby for the final, which will be held at Wembley for only the fourth time.

Both semi-finals were broadcast live on the BBC for the first time in the competition's 48-year history, while over 3,000 fans were at Kingsmeadow to see Chelsea's hard-fought win.
