Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani called on the teachers of “Gujarati” language to spare at least one hour everyday to enhance knowledge and inclination towards mother tongue among the students. The Chief Minister was speaking at function ‘Pride for Mother Tongue’ organized in reference to the state government’s decision to make ‘Gujarati’ language as a mandatory subject for the students up to standard 10th.

Rupani stated that the instillation of virtues in today’s generation could be possible only through generating pride for mother tongue; without existence of the mother tongue we will lose our trait.

Quoting the importance and impact of the English language emphasized by Prime Minister as the global language, he said that our youths must be equipped with English language to take on the world competently, but, at the same time our mother tongue ‘Gujarati’ should not be pushed aside or ignore.

He said the policy decision to make the ‘Gujarati’ language as mandatory for the students from 1st to 10th standard, irrespective of their attachment to any board, was taken after making detail deliberations over the feelings and demands of mother tongue’s lovers, as only less than 30% students were able to clear the examination of ‘Gujarati’ language in the 10th standard.

Education Minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama recalled that in 1964 ‘Kothari Commission’ had attempted to make the ‘Gujarati’ as a mandatory language. Similarly attempts were also made by Navalbhai Shah, Gordhanbhai Chokhawala, he added.
