The Uttar Pradesh government took action against erring officials, said Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma here on Sunday. He was responding to a question on the Unnao rape case in which the local BJP MLA is one of the accused.

“We took swift action against the culprits. We have taken action against erring officials. They have been suspended. We can’t just hang people. The minute the CM [Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath] got to know about the matter, immediate and strict action was taken,” he said.

Without taking the name of the Samajwadi Party (SP), he also said that the BJP is not the party which did not act against people like Gayatri Prajapati despite serious charges against him.

“There was this case of Gayatri Prajapati where serious charges were levelled against him with substantial evidence. But it was the previous government which did not do anything. Till the time the government lasted, no action was taken against him. We do not believe in that kind of governance, where people like him are given safety and security. This government took immediate action,” Mr. Sharma added.

He also said that the proposed mahagathbandhan [grand alliance] between the SP and Bahujan Samaj Party would not last. “It is the most opportunistic alliance. Who will be the leader of the alliance, we will get to know only after the quarrel between them ends,” he said.
