GUWAHATI: The
Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (
KMSS) on Friday hit out at the Centre for holding the hearing of the much-debated Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 in New Delhi at a time when the state is gearing up for
Rongali Bihu celebrations.
"When the people of the state will be engaging in festivities, the joint parliamentary committee wants to undertake the hearing on the most crucial issue outside the state," KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi said on the eve of Bihu.
The bill seeks to grant citizenship to refugees belonging to "religious minorities" from Bangladesh, Pakistan and
Afghanistan. The joint parliamentary committee was scheduled to have its second hearing on the matter on April 12, but it was postponed till April 17. The decision to hold the hearing in Delhi met strong opposition in the state from all quarters.
On Thursday, BJP's ally Asom Gana Parishad had said it will continue to oppose the bill and not compromise on the issue.
