Former V-C of law varsity

gets advance bail

The Madras High Court on Friday granted anticipatory bail to P. Vanangamudi, 61, former Vice-Chancellor of Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University and five others in a case booked against them by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption sleuths on charges of corruption while filling law seats under NRI quota when they were in office in 2016. Justice A.D. Jagadish Chandira granted the relief on condition that they should appear before the investigating officer twice a day for a period of one week, and as and when required thereafter. The petitioners included K.S. Sarwani, 51, who was the head of the department of inter-disciplinary studies; V. Balaji, 47, Registrar (in-charge); S.K. Ashok Kumar, Deputy Registrar (in-charge) and D. Jaishankar, 51, Associate Professor of Economics.

The case gained more significance since Jaya TV CEO Vivek Jayaraman’s name too figured in the case on the ground that he was one of the beneficiaries of the NRI quota.
