London Olympics bronze medallist Saina Nehwal, Rio Olympics silver medallist Pusarla Sindhu and newly-crowned world No 1 Kidambi Srikanth progressed to the final in women's and men's singles badminton respectively at the 21st Commonwealth Games on Saturday.

Saina, who had clinched the gold in 2010 Delhi Games but missed the 2014 Games due to injury, needed 68 minutes to quell a strong challenge from Scotland's Kristy Gilmour, a  silver medallist in Glasgow four years ago, for a 21-14, 18-21, 21-17 in a women's singles semi-final.

She will take on Sindhu, who defeated defending champion Michelle Li of Canada 21-18, 21-8 in 36 minutes in the second women's semi-final.

Srikanth, playing on court 1, saw off 2010 Commonwealth Games silver medallist Rajiv Ouseph of England, winning the first men's singles semi-final 21-10, 21-17 in a little over 30 minutes.

He will face Malaysia's Lee Chong Wei, who was forced to draw on all his experience and beat India's H S Prannoy 21-16, 9-21, 21-14, the second semi-final, which lasted 58 minutes.

Earlier, Ashwini Ponnappa and N Sikki Reddy lost 21-17, 15-21, 4-21 to the Malaysian combination of Mei Kuan Chow and Vivian Hoo in women's doubles.

The Indian pair will now play for the bronze medal against local hopes Setyana Mapasa and Gronya Somerville later in the day.
