JANGLA: Lauding the efforts of Dr BR Ambedkar on his birth anniversary, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said it’s because of Ambedkar’s contribution towards the nation that a person belonging to a poor and very backward family like him could become the prime minister.

Speaking at a function in Bijapur, one of the worst Maoist affected district in tribal Bastar region of Chhattisgarh, Modi said “I am bowing before Baba Saheb’s name, which gives us an aspiration and hope”, he said and exhorted the audience to join him in raising slogans “Baha saheb Amar rahe” and “Jai Bheem”.

PM Modi further pointed out that Baba Saheb was a well-educated man, who could have lived a luxurious life in any part of the developed world but chose to live and work for upliftment of the Dalits and to fight for their rights. He said Baba Saheb was determined to work for those people who lagged behind in the society.

“It is because of Baba Saheb’s inspiration that I have come here today in Bijapur raise the hopes and aspirations among the people of this backward tribal region”, he said, adding the Centre and his government is always with the deprived people. Even after 70 years of independence, he said, many of the districts, including in Bastar, have lagged behind in the race for development despite, the region having vast natural resources.

PM Modi said his government has taken several initiatives that would put these backward regions on fast track of development and its results are already visible. Reiterating his government’s commitment for the upliftment of the downtrodden, he said efforts are being made to introduce new concepts and ways for development as traditional ways and means are no more effective with the changing times.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chhattisgarh chief minister Raman Singh offered floral tributes to Baba Saheb Ambedkar.
