Bharat Bill Payments, the platform that was envisaged by the Reserve Bank of India for easing of bill payments for Indian consumers, has started taking early steps into wide-scale adoption with around 3 crore transactions being reported in March of this year, against 1.8 crore a year earlier.

Having gone live with 71 BBPOUs (Bill Payment Operating Units) and eight sectors which accept BBPS payments, National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) which runs the platform hopes to see higher adoption in the coming years. Operating units are the ones which have been licensed by the central bank for collecting bill payments from customers.

“In terms of billers there are 75 across five categories and 21 more are set to be connected within the next four to five weeks,” said A R Ramesh, chief project officer for BBPS.

Among all the sectors that generate bills regularly, BBPS accepts bill payments for five major sectors like electricity, water, direct to home, telecom and gas bills. “Our target as of now is to push up the supply side for BBPS by integrating as many billers as possible and also eventually it will help in deepening the channels,” he said.
