He said under Article 2 of the US constitution, the US President has all the powers and rights to protect US interests and nation security.
In a strongly worded statement, US Defence Secretary, James Mattis said, that the singular aim of the strikes were to destroy the nuclear capabilities and the research installations of Syria. He went on to say that the Asad Regime remained ignorant and did not act after repeated warnings by the world community to denounce nuclear use.

He also condemned the recent chemical attack by the Syrian state in the suburb of Douma. Mattis also reiterated that the sites of today's strikes were strategically chosen. 'These sites are where the research facilities were located,' said Mattis. Through these strikes we wanted to ensure that Syria is not capable of conducting any research related to nuclear use in future, said Mattis.

Justifying the attack, he said, the strikes specifically targeted Syrian Regime's chemical weapons programme.

He also said that the trust and coordination among the allies( France & UK) were very crucial in conducting today's strikes.

James Mattis also urged the world community to act together with a singular resolve to prevent any country from using chemical weapons in future.

He said under Article 2 of the US constitution, the US President has all the powers and rights to protect US interests and nation security.

Earlier today, President Donald Trump had approved US military strikes against Syrian chemical weapons sites, in collaboration with the UK and France.
