CHENNAI: Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar on Friday questioned the rationale behind DMK working president M K Stalin meeting Governor Banwarilal Purohit as he had in the past criticised the Governor for reviewing government schemes.

Answering queries of mediapersons, the minister said Stalin, who had criticised the Governor in the past, was meeting him now. “This is sheer opportunism,” he commented.

Responding to a question, the minister said, “For the fishing ban period of April 15 to June 15, Rs 82 crore would be given to 1.60 crore fishermen families as financial assistance.”

Similarly, as per court directions, the companies of two ships that caused oil leakage when they collided in January 2017 would be paying a Rs 141-crore compensation to the fishermen affected by the leakage.

The companies would be paying the amount within 10 days and the compensation would be credited into the bank accounts of 1.15 lakh fishermen, the minister added.
