Honoured, says To Let director

Says he is happy that an independent film has been recognised

Director Chezhiyan, whose Tamil film, To Let, has won the National Film Award for the Best Tamil Film, reacted to the development saying that he was honoured and happy that an independent film has been recognised.

“I don’t categorise cinema as commercial and non-commercial. All movies are commercial. We could probably differentiate movies as ‘good cinema’ and ‘bad cinema’,” he added.

A cinematographer-turned-director, Chezhiyan said the movie was made for film festivals. “We have made a film that is real and close to reality. Digital cinema has made it possible,” he said.

He didn’t expect the film to win awards. “The space for Tamil films in the festival circuit is sparse. We also have stories to tell. This was an effort in that direction,” he said.
