Ramirez (wrist) out of Red Sox lineup vs. Orioles

Boston Red Sox first baseman Hanley Ramirez was held out of Friday's lineup, one day after being hit by a pitch on his right wrist.

The Red Sox are opening a four-game series against the Baltimore Orioles and will start Mitch Moreland in his place.

Ramirez departed in the first inning of Thursday's 6-3 win over the New York Yankees after he suffered a bruised right wrist when he was hit by a pitch.

The Red Sox said X-rays were negative.

Ramirez was in obvious pain when hit by the 94-mph fastball from Yankees right-hander Sonny Gray. He started to swing at the inside pitch and then held up as the ball caromed off his hand.

Gray appeared to signal to Ramirez that there was no intent.

Moreland ran for Ramirez and replaced him at first base.

Tensions were high after a benches-clearing brawl in Wednesday's game that led to the two main figures drawing suspensions. Red Sox right-hander Joe Kelly was suspended six games on Thursday by Major League Baseball, and Yankees designated hitter Tyler Austin drew a five-game ban. Both players are appealing the punishment.

Tzu-Wei Lin, recently called up from Triple-A Pawtucket, also makes his first start of the year, replacing Xander Bogaerts at shortstop and batting ninth. Bogaerts was placed on the 10-day DL on Monday with a cracked bone in his left ankle.
