Remember when we were all young and wide-eyed and waiting for Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) and Melinda May (Ming Na Wen) to declare their undying love for each other? Well, it only took five years (plus a 20 minute preemption bump thanks to President Donald Trump), but we finally got it!

The news that Coulson is dying thanks to the necrotic tissue spread from his old wound from Loki (Tom Hiddleston) threw his life into sharp contrast from what it was before. He started grooming Daisy (Chloe Bennett) to take over for him as team leader and he began operating under the assumption that he was expendable since he'd die soon anyway. The one big issue he didn't attempt to wrap up before he bit the big one was his will they, won't they relationship with May.

Naturally, May decided if he wasn't going to make the big move (and if he was determined to act like an idiot), she'd have to be the one to step up.

In a heated debate about Coulson's behavior since his "diagnosis," May begged him to stop behaving as though he was willing and ready to die. Coulson argued that he had come to terms with his fate, and he chose to accept it. May's response will no doubt go down in shipper history.

"You don't get to make that decision alone. That decision is made with the people who love you, and that's me. I love you."

Holy. Crap.

Sure, it wasn't the most romantic of declarations, considering they were delivered during an argument about life and death (and immediately followed by, "I thought that would shut you up"), but at this point Philinda shippers will take what they can get!

Moving forward, it's hard to say whether Coulson will be spurred to action where May is concerned, or if he'll keep his feelings to himself yet again. There's not a lot of opportunity for a happily ever after unless they find a cure to what's killing him, but then again, maybe they'll decide to be happy with the time they have and get together anyways. Considering executive producers Jed Whedon, Maurissa Tancharoen and Jeffrey Bell have said that this season finale could also serve as a series finale, it would be a big let down to wrap this story up without some payoff for the show's most anticipated romance.
