Hamelin Bay still closed after mass whale stranding due to shark fears
Hamelin Bay in WA’s south-west is still closed following last month’s mass whale beaching because the decomposing carcasses may continue to attract sharks.
The beach will remain closed until at least 4.30pm on Monday.
More than 140 short finned pilot whales died in the mass stranding at the bay 10 kilometers north of Augusta.
Six surviving whales were helped back out to sea by volunteers and authorities.
Officers from the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) said holidaying families and beach-goers should exercise caution while the carcasses are removed or decompose naturally.
“It is possible decomposing whale carcasses will continue to act as an attractant that could lead to sharks coming close in to shore along this stretch of coast,” a DBCA spokesperson said.
