ROCK HILL, S.C. — Radford swept a Big South Conference doubleheader from Winthrop by the scores of 4-1 and 9-5 on Saturday, giving the Highlanders the series.

In the opener, Austin Ross threw 7 1/3 innings striking out a career-high 11 batters in picking up his sixth win of the season.

Matt Roth went 2 for 3 and scored a run and Carlin Christian hit a two-run double for Radford.

In the nightcap, the Highlanders (14-21, 6-9) scored three runs in the eighth inning and added another in the ninth to break open a tied score. The three-run eighth was capped with a Anthony Miano two-run single.

Will Harless went 2 for 4, including a solo homer, and scored two runs for Radford.

Winthrop fell to 17-20, 9-6.

BASEBALL

UNC takes two from Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE — The No. 22 Tar Heels (24-12, 12-6 ACC) swept the Cavaliers (20-16, 7-11) in a twin bill by the scores of 8-6 and 12-6.

In the opener, North Carolina took an early 5-1 lead. The Cavs fought back and tied the score with a three-run eighth inning. The Tar Heels answered with two runs in the top of the ninth and held on for the win.

Cayman Richardson was 3 for 4 with an RBI and scored twice and Andy Weber and Nate Eikhoff drove in two runs each for Virginia.

In the nightcap, Carolina scored four runs in the first, four in the fourth and four in the ninth to pick up the win.

Brendan Rivoli went 2 for 5, including a solo homer, with two RBIs and scored a run and Richardson drove in a pair of runs for the Hoos.

Hokies get swept by No. 21 Louisville

BLACKSBURG — Nick Bennett tossed eight innings of one-run ball in the opener and the offense woke up in a big way in the nightcap as Louisville (24-11, 9-9) completed a doubleheader and weekend series sweep of Virginia Tech (15-20, 6-12) at the new English Field at Union Park Saturday with victories of 3-1 and 16-1.

Danny Oriente, Zeke Pinkham and Lucas Dunn each drove in runs for the Cardinals in the opener. J.D. Mundy accounted for the lone Tech run with a sacrifice fly.

Oriente led the onslaught in the nightcap with three RBIs while four others drove home a pair. Tom Stoffel accounted for the lone run for the Hokies with a first-inning solo homer.

W&L splits with Guilford

LEXINGTON — The Generals (10-18, 3-11 ODAC) split a twin bill with Guilford (15-15, 6-9), winning Game 1 6-5 and falling 9-8 in Game 2.

In the opener, W&L scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth, with Chadwick Feeley hitting a walk-off RBI-single tjat scored Zach Loewenberg.

Loewenberg had two hits, two RBIs and scored twice. His single in the ninth, coupled with a throwing error, tied the score.

In the nightcap, the Quakers led 9-4 in the seventh and held on with the tying run on base in the ninth.

For W&L, Matt Whitely went 3 for 4, including a solo homer, with two RBIs, while Austin Crane had three hits, two RBIs and a run.

SVU takes two from Wesley

DOVER, Del. — The Knights (14-13, 6-6 CAC) swept a doubleheader from host Wesley (9-18, 3-10) by the scores of 5-2 and 2-0.

In the opener Southern Virginia scored all five runs in the second inning, highlight by Caleb Layden’s two-run double.

Jonathan Soto went 3 for 4 and scored a run for the Knights.

In the nightcap, Taylor Peterson threw a four-hit shutout and SVU scored two unearned runs in the third inning. Brady Lamb went 2 for 4 for the Knights.

SOFTBALL

Tech sweeps Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE — The Hokies (19-24, 5-12 ACC) swept a doubleheader from the Cavaliers (12-31, 3-15) by the scores of 9-4 and 3-2.

In the opener, Olivia Lattin hit a grand slam and Jessie Mehr hit a three-run shot to power Tech. Lattin, Sierra Walton, Cana Davis and Mehr all had two hits for the Hokies.

Danni Ingraham had a two-run homer, and Allison Davis had two hits, an RBI and scored twice for Virginia.

Winning pitcher Jordan Dail allowed four runs and six hits.

In the nightcap, both teams scored twice in the second inning, with Tech scoring the game-winner in the sixth on a Mehr single, followed by a throwing error, allowing Davis to score. Carrie Eberle picked up the win, throwing a complete-game three-hitter with seven strikeouts and no walks. Caroline Shoenewald and Taylor Clark each drove in a run for Tech while Kate Covington and Ashley Jennings (Jefferson Forest) had an RBI each for the Cavs.

Liberty takes two from Highlanders

RADFORD — The Highlanders (22-15, 6-6 Big South) dropped a doubleheader to Liberty (32-12, 12-3) by the scores of 3-1 and 1-0.

In the opener, Radford jumped on top in the first inning on an RBI-single by Maggie Rowe, scoring Hannah Medlam. The Flames’ pitching duo of Chase Cassady and Julia Dimartino allowed just two more hits for the remainder of the game.

In the nightcap, the duo of Cassady and Dimartino continued their mastery over the Highlanders’ bats, tossing a combined one-hitter. Hunter Mundy had Radford’s hit.

Liberty’s run came in the fifth inning on a home run by Kaitlin McFarland.

Roanoke, Lynchburg split

LYNCHBURG — The Maroons (21-13, 8-4 ODAC) split with Lynchburg (22-10, 8-6) winning the opener 12-7 and getting beat 2-0 in the nightcap.

In Game 1, Roanoke hung seven runs on the board in the seventh inning to break the game open. Allison Wagner and Anna Clowdis, who drove in two runs in the seventh, finished with three hits, three RBIs and a run. Katie Smith had two hits, an RBI and scored three runs for Roanoke.

In Game 2, the Maroons fell victim to a three-hit shutout by Kayley Cox.

Taylor Carter (Northside), Katie Smith and Mattie Morris had one hit each for Roanoke.

SVU splits with Wesley

BUENA VISTA — The Knights (13-19, 2-7 CAC) split a conference doubleheader with Wesley (12-2-2, 2-6-1) losing the opener 4-3 and taking Game 2 9-8.

In the first game, the Wolverines scored two runs in the fourth and two in the fifth, and held on for the win. SVU pulled to within one in the bottom of the seventh but left the tying run stranded on second base. Katierose Helens went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored for the Knights.

In the nightcap, SVU took a 7-5 lead and held on for the win. Heather Terranova went 2 for 2 with three RBIs and scored twice, and Tara Hilton and Jordan Stites had two hits and an RBI each.

MEN'S LACROSSE

No. 3 Duke 18, No. 10 Virginia 13

CHARLOTTESVILLE — The Blue Devils (11-2, 3-1 ACC), scored six straight goals at one point to secure the win.

Michael Kraus led the Cavaliers (9-4, 1-3) with four goals and five assists, while Mikey Herring added three goals and an assist. Dox Aitken scored two goals and dished out an assist, and Mike D’Amario added two goals for the Hoos.

No. 13 Washington and Lee 18, Bridgewater 5

BRIDGEWATER — The Generals (10-3, 6-0 ODAC) scored nine first-quarter goals on the Eagles (8-5, 2-4) on the way to their 10th straight win.

A.J. Witherell paced W&L with six goals and one assist, all recorded in the first half, upping his career points total to 204, the seventh player in program history to top 200 career points. His 123 goals rank fifth all-time at W&L. Hudson Hamill added two goals for the Generals.

No. 19 Roanoke 20, Randolph-Macon 8

The Maroons (10-4, 5-2 ODAC) rode a 10-2 halftime lead to pick up a win over the Yellow Jackets (7-7, 2-4).

Roanoke outscored Randolph-Macon 4-0 in the second period and scored the first three goals of the second half.

Garritt Schwarz scored five goals and dished out two assists, while Matthew Lintner added three goals for Roanoke.

Southern Virginia 21, Wesley 7

BUENA VISTA — The Knights (9-6, 3-3 CAC) outscored the Wolverines (3-10, 1-5) 15-3 in the second and third periods.

Brady Cook, Shawn Lamb and Seth Garff scored three goals each, with Garff dishing out four assists and Lamb three.

Derek Lamb recorded 16 saves in the net for SVU.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE

No. 2 Boston College 9, No. 13 Virginia Tech 7

NEWTON, Mass. — The Hokies (11-5, 4-2) got back-to-back goals from Paige Petty and Taylor Caskey to tie the score late in the second half, but two goals by Eagles made the difference, and Boston College (16-0, 6-0) clinched the ACC regular-season crown.

Petty and Marissa Davey scored two goals each for Tech, and Meagh Graham posted eight saves in the net.

No. 11 Virginia 18, Louisville 10

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Cavaliers (9-6, 4-2 ACC) broke a tie game with a 6-0 run and allowed just two goals for the Cardinals (6-9, 0-6) in the final 23 minutes the game.

Angie Loynaz scored a career-high four goals and had two assists, Sammy Mueller added four goals and Ana Hagerup netted three for the Hoos. Keeper Rachel Vander Kolk posted a season-high 13 saves for Virginia.

Campbell 17, Radford 12

BUIES CREEK, N.C. — The Highlanders (5-9, 2-3 Big South) battled back from a six-goal deficit to come within one goal but the Camels (7-8, 3-2) found the back of the net five times in the final eight minutes to secure the win.

Juliette Ruland led Radford with four goals, Adrian Rius scored three times and Lindsey Carroll added two.

Hannah Rosen made 12 saves in her first start of the season, giving her double-digit saves in back-to-back games.

Roanoke 25, Randolph 3

After giving up a goal early, the Maroons (7-6, 2-4 ODAC) went on a 13-0 run, keeping the WildCats (2-10, 0-5) scoreless for over 16 minutes on senior day.

Senior Mckenna Polak and Ellie Armstrong each netted six goals, and Maggie Lewis added four.

No. 11 Washington and Lee 24, Guilford 6

LEXINGTON — The Generals (9-4, 5-0 ODAC) used a seven-goal run midway through the first half to come away with a win over the Quakers (6-7, 1-4).

Claire Fulton scored a career-high four goals and added an assist. Cordelia Peters finished with three goals and two assists, while Mimi MacCowatt added four goals.

Leaderboard top-heavy after one round at Valley 4-Ball

Three twosomes share the lead after the first day of the 25th Annual Valley 4-Ball Classic at Hunting Hills Country Club.

The teams of Brandon Lacroix and Brandon Grogan, Matt Chandler and Daryl Byrd, and John Swanson and Richie Jeter all shot 65 in the first round. They’re one shot ahead of Bill Lawfield and Justin Young. Matt Shlor and Aadam McGarrell are two back.

In the senior division, Stephen Couture and Roy Foutz lead the way after a first-round 63. Two other teams — Bob Bailey and Mike Link, and Dean Griffith and Mike Nicewarner — are three off of the pace.

MEN'S GOLF

Ferrum’s Keiser ties for second

LAGRANGE, Ga. — Lance Keiser of Ferrum finished in a tie for second place, carding an even-par 216 at the 54-hole USA South men’s conference golf tournament. Keiser tied with N.C. Wesleyan’s Juan de Giacomi, two stroke behind medalist Grady Anderson also of N.C. Wesleyan.

Wesleyan won the team championship shooting a 28-over 892.

As a team, Ferrum finished seventh out of eight teams, carding a 57-over 921.

UVa gets 3rd at Yale tourney

NEWHAVEN, Conn. — Virginia finished third out of 16 teams in the Yale Spring Invitational.

The Cavs fired a 27-over 587 in the 36-hole event.

Tennessee won the team title, carding a 5-over 564.

Danny Walker led the Cavaliers individually, finishing in sixth place with a 4-over 144. Lorenzo Scalise of Tennessee and Yale’s James Nicholas and Eoin Leonard tied for medalist honors at 2-under 138.

WOMEN'S GOLF

RU’s Thiagaraj takes 5th at Big South

NINETY SIX, S.C. — No. 1 seed Campbell carded a 13-over 877 to win the Big South Women’s Golf Championship at The Patriot Golf Club at Grand Harbor (par 72, 6,175 yards) in Ninety Six, S.C.

The Camels, who won by 37 strokes also had the medalist in Isabell Ekstrom, the only player to finish the 54-hole event under par at 3-under 213.

Radford’s Khushboo Thiagaraj finished in fifth place, carding a three-round score of 6-over 222. The Highlanders finished eighth out of nine teams ,carding a 55-over 945.
