In a nation-wide protest fast, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah on Thursday led the party leaders and workers in registering their anger against what they called Congress party’s attempt to kill democracy and create hurdles in the way of country’s progress by derailing the Budget Session of Parliament.

The Prime Minister held the day-long fast while attending his official function including a visit to Tamil Nadu to open the Defence Expo at Kanchipuram near Chennai. Shah staged a sit-in protest at Hubli in Karnataka and blamed Congress president Rahul Gandhi and his party for indulging in the politics of negativity and conspiracy.

Shah and BJP Ministers, MPs, and workers in all the States held protest ‘Loktantra Bachao Upvaas-Dharna’ that begun from 10 am and ended at 5 pm at different venues across the country.

The Congress and the BJP have traded charges against each other for turning the second part of the Budget Session a washout.

While the BJP accused the Congress of bringing politics to a new low by paralysing Parliament proceedings, the Congress countered saying it was the ruling party which did not want to face the tough questions posed by the Opposition.

The BJP president undertook a hunger strike along with party’s chief ministerial candidate BS Yeddyurappa and other MPs. “I want to ask @RahulGandhi and #SoniaGandhi - why are you taking salary & perks from #Parliament when you did not allow it to function? Please give answer to people of India,” Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar tweeted.

“The Modi Government wants to make laws for the people but the Congress isn’t letting us do so by continuously disrupting the Parliament sessions,” said Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar. Both the Ministers took part in protest fast in Karnataka.

In the national Capital, ?BJP?MPs observed the day-long fast over parliamentary disruptions at Hanuman Mandir in Connaught Place.

Union Minister Harsh Vardhan, who represents the Chandani Chowk constituency, East Delhi MP MaheishGirri, New Delhi MP Meenakshi Lekhi, West Delhi MP Pravesh Verma, North-West Delhi MP Udit Raj, South Delhi MP Ramesh Bidhuri and North-East Delhi MP Manoj Tiwari are among the leaders who participated in the fast that ended at 4 pm.

Union Minister Piyush Goyal observed the day-long fast in Maharashtra’s Thane. Goyal said, “The way in which the Congress and other Opposition parties did not let the Budget Session run, is condemnable to say the least.”
