Joyce F. Murphy, 64, of Iowa City, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, April 10, 2018, at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City.
A celebration of Joyce's life will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday, April 16, at The Kirkwood Room, 515 Kirkwood Ave., Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Murphy family or to a charity of the donor's choice.
Joyce was born Aug. 3, 1953, in Pauls Valley, Okla., the daughter of James and Mary (Willard) O'Neal.
Joyce, her parents and siblings lived in various places before moving to Iowa,
where she graduated from West Liberty High School in 1971. From there she went
to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and graduated from Kirkwood Community College in 1972 with
a clerical-receptionist diploma. She was employed by the University of Iowa in 1973, where she was admired and respected by all who met her until she retired in 2016.
On Aug. 19, 1978, Joyce married the love of her life, Steve Murphy, and they were married at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. Their daughter, Jessica, was born to them on July 22, 1981, bringing much joy to the family.
Joyce looked forward to the family reunions and enjoyed life abundantly doing her favorite things: cooking; golfing; bowling; fishing; hot-air balloons; games; reading; spoiling her daughter, granddaughter, many nephews and nieces with lots of good memories; and helping others.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, James R. O'Neal and Mary (Willard) O'Neal.
Joyce is survived by her loving husband, Steve "Murph" Murphy; her daughter, Jessica; her granddaughter, Mary Allison; her sisters, Linda (Ray) Penderson and Pam (Steve) Botkins; and her brother, James E. O'Neal. Joyce also is survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and -nephews and one great-great-niece.
