Dwayne Johnson in a scene from the movie Rampage

Cape Town – Dwayne Johnson and a giant albino gorilla named George stomps into cinemas this weekend.

Loosely based on the 1980s video game, Rampage follows primatologist Davis Okoye who has to save America when mutated animals start destroying cities.

Also in cinemas: Denzel Washington in his Oscar nominated role as an eccentric civil rights lawyer, and Anne Hathaway battles a monster.

Here are the 3 new films releasing in SA:

Movie: Rampage

Our rating: 2/5

Short review: While it’s terribly cliché, Rampage has enough action, suspense and some comedy to keep you entertained – which is exactly what you’d expect from this type of movie.

Movie: Roman J. Israel, Esq.

Our rating: 3/5

Short review: Roman J Israel is a fantastic character study wrapped in a boring, overly familiar plot that that not even Denzel Washington at his very best can fully transcend.

Movie: Colossal

Our rating: 3/5

Short review: Although an interesting concept that’s well executed, Colossal’s mix of genres may make it difficult to find an audience that will sit through the strangeness.
