The Grapevine-Rider girls regional final rematch will come to fruition.

But before the Lady Raiders ensured it would happen, Grapevine needed to come back from a one-goal halftime deficit Friday in the Region I-5A semifinals.

Sophie Smith scored two goals in first 11 minutes of the second half against Lubbock Coronado, leading the 5A powerhouse to a 3-1 victory.

Coronado’s Zillah Castro ended Grapevine’s 12-game shutout streak in the 19th minute with a low far-post shot from long range.

But aided by the wind, Smith equalized four minutes into the second half on a shot outside the 18-yard box and converted Brianna Gajewski’s cross.shortly after.

“It’s really important because the more the game goes on and you’re still losing, the more your confidence drops,” Smith said of responding quickly. “To get that first goal and get it tied, it’s a completely different game.

“I’m really glad that we got to play down and know how it feels and what we have to do to come back and win a game.”

With less than 10 minutes left, Grapevine freshman Kyleigh Rhodes added an insurance goal. It was Rhodes who had the lone tally in the Lady Mustangs' 1-0 win over Wichita Falls High School two weeks ago.

Aledo advances past Bowie in PKs

In a frenzied final couple minutes of regulation, Aledo goalie Konrad Garbowski received a yellow card for time wasting. Once he was subbed back in, Bowie's Sergio Enriquez scored with 1:25 remaining to tie the game.

But the German foreign exchange student saved two of Bowie's penalty kicks in the shootout as Aledo survived with a 3-2 victory.

"I think the goal in the last minute put us together even closer as a team," Garbowski said. "We fought for each other, everybody on the field and in the stands. We knew we couldn't give it away that easy."

The Bearcats won the best-of-five shootout 4-1 with Mickey Maloney drilling the game-winner in the fourth round.

Aledo's Micco Little and Bowie's Raul Nieto traded first-half goals, but the Bearcats went ahead 2-1 when Connor Steele's shot from about 12 yards out with 21:35 remaining found the back of the net.

Aledo advances to the Region I-5A final at 12:30 p.m. Saturday and will play El Paso Del Valle.
