A Madison Heights man was sentenced to nearly three years behind bars after pleading guilty Friday to abduction and assault of a female victim.
Hubert Ray Sprouse, 56, also was found guilty Friday in Amherst County Circuit Court of one count each of unlawful wounding and violating a protective order. Judge Michael Garrett sen-tenced Sprouse to active jail time of two years and nine month in accordance with a plea agreement.
The unlawful wounding charge was reduced from an initial malicious wounding charge while a rape charge was dropped as part of the plea deal.
Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Amber Drumheller said in September 2017 Sprouse and the victim had an argument and he physically assaulted her and kept her from leaving a resi-dence, which meets the legal threshold for abduction.
Sprouse threatened to kill the victim during the incident, Drumheller said. A protective order was taken out against him and days later he attempted to have contact through a third party in violation of the order, according to prosecutors’ evidence.
In addressing the plea deal, Drumheller said the victim did not want to testify and is in agreement with its terms.
Garrett ordered two years of supervised probation and $7,621 in restitution. Sprouse also is ordered to submit to drug screening and have no contact with the victim.
Sprouse also is credited with time served since his October 2017 arrest, according to Garrett’s ruling.
