Panel orders Rs 40 lakh to kid injured due to electrocution

BENGALURU: Just a day after the Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd (KPTCL) passed on the buck of paying compensation to the people injured in electric accidents on Bengaluru Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM), here comes an order where it has to cough up Rs 40 lakh.
On Thursday, the Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has issued an order directing KPTCL to pay compensation of Rs 40 lakh to the six-year-old boy who was injured when he came in contact with a high-tension wire that had passed through their building in September 2017.
As per the complaint received by the Commission and as explained by parents, six-year-old Muizz Ahmed Sharif, residing in Bannerghatta Road, came in contact with the wire. He sustained 85% burns throughout the body and had to be in ICU for 40 days. The boy is now recovering. "We did not have any hopes of getting him back in our lives. Somehow, he is recovering. But, even now, he is unable to sit in the toilet, not able to bend his legs, and the skin has become thick after grafting," said Maqsood Ahmed Sharif, father of the child.
A few days after the incident, his parents managed to register an online complaint before the Commission. It issued a series of notices and after hearing, passed an order on Thursday to provide Rs 40 lakh as compensation. According to sources from the Commission, earlier, the compensation amount discussed was Rs 99 lakh, but as the child is recovering, it has been reduced to Rs 40 lakh. As per the order, the respondent in the case (KPTCL) has been asked to deposit the amount in the bank account in the name of the victim within a week after the issuance of this order.
School gives special permission to kid
As the doctors have said that he can go to school, the parents have urged the school authorities to allow him to wear full pants in classroom. “His legs and thighs are burnt. Other kids may get scared or treat him separately. Hence, we met the principal and he agreed,” said the father.
