To facilitate the higher studies of a differently-abled boy

A group of residents of Velimanna on Thursday staged a dharna outside the civil station demanding that the government upgrade Government Mappila UP School to a high school to facilitate the higher studies of Asim, a differently-abled boy, who has just passed Class 7.

According to Sartaj Ahmed, convener of the Velimanna Govt. Mappila UP School Upgradation Action Committee, the government had rejected their request to upgrade the school as some officials had misled the Chief Minister’s office.

There was no high school within a five-km radius. Though Asim had personally sent requests to the Chief Minister, they were not taken seriously as the same officials had claimed that “the management was propping up Asim for their vested interests.”

He said that the committee had earlier formed a one-km human wall in the village to drive home their point.

As the next step, Mr. Sartaj said, they would organise a march to the Secretariat soon by roping in prominent personalities in the field of culture, sports and politics.
