BROOKFIELD—Though its toughest tests have yet to be passed, it was more of the same from the Newtown girls lacrosse team.

The Nighthawks continued their recent SWC dominance with another double-digit win, this time an 18-7 decision over Brookfield Thursday afternoon. Newtown improved to 4-1 so far this season, with its only blemish a 13-3 loss to non-conference foe Warde last weekend.

Winners of 11 of the past 13 SWC titles, the Nighthawks are off to another perfect start in the league behind routs of conference rivals.

“We’re sharp with the ball,” said Newtown coach Maura Fletcher. “They really share the ball and there are a lot of girls who are scoring; we have new players and are moving them around, so they are still getting comfortable. Defensively they’re starting to trust one another.”

Brookfield (2-2) got out to a positive start and only trailed 4-3 midway through the first half. Morgan Stankiewicz and Alex Heckmann combined for five goals and two assists for the Bobcats.

Newtown then seized control with five straight goals en route to seizing a 10-4 halftime lead. Rylee Harrell scored five goals for Newtown, which capitalized on a yellow card to the Bobcats by scoring three times in less than 30 seconds.

“We were taking care of the ball and that yellow card, they really capitalized on that,” Bobcats first-year coach Nicole Perrone said. “They pulled away from us after that.”

The Nighthawks scored three more times in a two-minute span to start the second half and wrap up the triumph. Newtown will meet one of its biggest obstacles to another conference crown next week when it visits neighboring Pomperaug Thursday.

“Pomperaug beat New Fairfield the other day and those are probably the other two strong teams in the conference,” Fletcher said. “We know they are going to bring 100 percent because we beat them last year; we are preparing.”

PLAYER OF THE GAME

Keeley Kortze, Newtown: The speedy junior contributed two goals and two assists.

QUOTABLE

“Some of (my players) are new but they are ready to learn this year,” Perrone said. “Having a new team is awesome for that; we’re still learning to work with each other but they’re doing a nice job. I’ve been happy with their intensity.”
