Use technology responsibly, Minister tells students

Nirmala Sitharaman wants youngsters to be opinion-builders, policy-changers

As responsible citizens, youngsters with access to technology should be opinion-builders, said Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

At the diamond jubilee celebrations of the Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan Group of Schools here on Thursday, she urged the students to use their technical knowledge to be responsible citizens and ensure “nothing that hurts the core of this country is entertained.”

“You may have your own ideologies but among your peer groups be a policy-changer.... Every message that you write, want to retweet or rewrite and every like on social media should be done with responsibility,” she said, adding that they should maintain decorum while expressing themselves.

It should not “lead to dissension and division that will hurt the country or even bring animosity among people or speak in toxic language,” she said.

“Politics is a place when many of our family would hate to think to go, but I am sure that many of us do realise that we have to go there to clean it,” the Minister said.

Praise for YGP

Ms. Sitharaman appreciated Mrs. Y.G. Parthasarathy, dean and director of the PSBB group of schools, for maintaining the quality of education over the years.

Mrs. Parthasarathy acknowledged the contribution of her family and the team of teachers at the PSBB Group of Schools that helped the school to grow from strength to strength.

On the occasion, ‘Word Weavers’ Digest’, a collection of short stories by students of PSBB, and the diamond jubilee souvenir were released.
