A 71-year-old woman was pronounced dead Friday morning after a single-car crash on West Commerce Street in Smyrna.

The woman was driving on the street near School Lane when her car veered off the road, hitting a fence and a road sign, Cpl. Brian Donner of Smyrna police said.

The car swerved back onto the road, but crossed into oncoming traffic and eventually struck a tree in the 200 block of W. Commerce St.

The impact caused significant damage to the driver's side of the car, Donner said.

Police arrived at the scene at about 9:50 a.m, as witnesses and emergency personnel removed the woman from the car. Medics began performing life-saving treatment.

After being transported to Kent General Hospital, the driver was pronounced dead as a result of her injuries, Donner said.

The investigation remains active, Donner said.
