A week ago, Jeth Nagar Residents Association (JERA) initiated “PSquare Painting of Platforms”, a project aimed at road safety in their backyard.

Another project called “Clean Colony”, which about divesting the locality of garbage bins, led to this one.

“Six months ago, a spot where a bin was permanently removed had a conspicuous gap, which had to be be filled. Besides, pavements were broken in a few places and this needed fixing,” says Ravi Nandyala, member of JERA.

When informed about this problem, the Greater Chennai Corporation brought a contractor on board to attend to it.

However, the contractor abandoned the work mid-way, even leaving behind his construction tools.

“Repeated calls to the assistant engineer of the zonal office went unanswered and the pavements continued to be in a shambles and were used as open urinals,” he says.

Residents apprised the Mylapore MLA R. Nataraj about this situation and sought permission to hire a contractor to carry out the niggling little work that was pending.

JERA members used the funds earmarked for the welfare activities of the association for this work.

In three days, 3,300 sq.ft of pavements in Jeth Nagar was repaired and six speed breakers re-painted. Reflectors were also attached to the speed breakers.

“We have followed all standard procedures and have not used any different colour or modified the structure in any unacceptable manner,” he points out.
