Lindale Mall Sears, last in Corridor, to close- The last Sears store in Cedar Rapids and the Corridor will close later this year.
Sears Holdings plans to close the Lindale Mall Sears, 4600 First Ave. NE, in July, a spokesman for the company confirmed Thursday. The Lindale store is owned by Seritage Growth Properties, a real estate investment trust company.
“Seritage Growth Properties is recapturing this Sears store as part of an agreement reached in 2015 between Seritage and Sears Holdings. As a result, the store will close in mid-July 2018,” Sears Holdings spokesman Howard Riefs said in an email. Read more...
Day 5 in the search for Jake Wilson- It was midmorning Thursday in La Porte City, and Black Hawk County Sheriff Tony Thompson was a mix of exhausted and invigorated — much like the dozens of local, state and federal officials entering Day 5 in their search for a missing 16-year-old boy.
After four days that saw several hundred people show up to aid in the search for autistic teen Jake Wilson, who went missing Saturday night, volunteers were no longer requested, and the search Thursday shifted from rescue to recovery. Read more...
University of Iowa construction freeze could last longer- A five-month University of Iowa moratorium on new campus construction — including athletics and hospital projects — could extend longer depending on the institution’s financial outlook come September.
UI President Bruce Harreld formally announced the construction freeze Thursday in the wake of legislative funding reversals that pulled back $11 million from the UI and Iowa State University in the current budget year ending June 30. That cut will take $5.5 million from the UI and $5.4 million from ISU and adds to about $30 million in state funding cuts since last year. Read more...

Teaching leadership is critical part of Matt Campbell's Iowa State football program- Iowa State football coach Matt Campbell’s favorite thing about being a head coach is developing leaders.
Campbell’s theory is that if he has a player-led program, the buy-in will be that much more from his athletes. He has to develop the leaders, but he lets them take the reins once they’re established.
It’s something he learned from legendary coach Larry Kehres at Mount Union, and it’s something he’s carried through as a head coach himself.
“My Mount Union experience, and comparing it to my Pittsburgh experience from when I was there, the one thing that was drastically different was the players’ ownership within the program,” Campbell said. Read more...
