US’ uTenant uses Tinder-style technology to help find property

Matt Sampson, former sales agent, has cut himself off from former colleagues and will launch a Tinder-style platform that connects tenants to warehouse space.

Mr Sampson, who spent seven years as an associate director of logistics and industrial services at CBRE, said his uTenant portal was intended to disrupt the commercial leasing industry like Uber has done for taxis and Airbnb for holiday accommodation.

"There's so much disruption going on in real estate. Billions is being spent globally, there's a massive wave coming," he told The Australian Financial Review.

Rather than tenants having to scour real estate listings and wait for agents to call them back, Mr Sampson's portal connects vacant warehouse space offered by landlords registered on the platform with the requirements entered by prospective tenants.

If there's a match – or a number of matches – the parties are put in contact with one another and can then negotiate a deal directly, with or without the assistance of uTenant.

It's free for tenants while landlords pay uTenant a fee based on 10 percent of the first year's net rent, a percentage of which is shared with the tenant.
