Chief of the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations Bobby Cameron will seek a second term.
Cameron made the announcement Friday while also announcing that the next elections for FSIN chief, first vice chief and third vice chief will take place Oct. 24 and 25. The announcement starts election season for the organization.
Cameron listed investment into post-secondary eduction for Indigenous students as an ongoing priority as he seeks more time in office, along with infrastructure needs like as a mental health wellness centre in La Ronge.
"We have a lot of work ahead of us to do," he said. "Some good constructive work has happened in the past but there's more work to do when it comes to inherent treaty and rights."
Chiefs serve three-year terms.
Likely visit from PM
Cameron said there's a "95 per cent" chance Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will attend an assembly of FSIN chiefs in Saskatoon next month.
"It's significant because never in the history of our organization have we had a sitting prime minister," said Cameron.
The treaty right to shelter is expect to be a talking point at that meeting.
