CHENNAI: On a day when
BJP MPs led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is observing a fast to protest against the
washout of Parliament’s recent session, AIADMK MP V
Maitreyan on Thursday expressed "fear" that the next Parliament
session will also meet the "same fate" if the Centre fails to set up the Cauvery Management Board (CMB) to resolve the inter-state water sharing dispute.
On his Facebook page, the AIADMK leader posted, "If the Union government does not constitute the CMB by May 3, as directed by the Supreme Court, I am afraid the ensuing monsoon session of the
Parliament will also meet the same fate resulting in yet another total washout. l pray better wisdom prevails on the Union government."
Maitreyan said the Cauvery was emotionally and sentimentally close to the hearts of the people of Tamil Nadu. Being denied justice from successive governments in New Delhi, former chief minister J Jayalalithaa fought a relentless battle for the Cauvery in the court. Due to her efforts, the Congress-led UPA government was forced to gazette the final order of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal in 2013.
He charged the successive governments at the Centre with doing little for forming the Cauvery Management Board.
"The Supreme Court, while giving the final verdict, directed the Centre to constitute the CMB. But instead of showing statesmanship, the Centre, guided by petty electoral considerations, chose to look the other way," Maitreyan alleged.
The leader said that it was under these circumstances that the AIADMK MPs were forced to stall the proceedings of the Parliament leading to its total washout.
