A student of Delhi University's Kirori Mal College alleged that he was thrashed by a group of students last month and was referred to as "Bihari". Senior Delhi Police officers, however, said the student had given a police complaint but withdrew it later. No case was registered in this regard, police said on Wednesday. This is third such incident reported from the Delhi University in less than two months.
The incident surfaced when a video of the incident went viral on the social media showing the student being gheraoed by a group of students and then being beaten up. Police said the incident took place on March 15.
Media reports on Wednesday claimed that the victim had given a complaint to police alleging that others used to ask him for money and targeted him saying "Tum UP Bihar ke ho yahan tumhari nahi chalegi (You are from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. No one will listen to you here)". The student has also alleged that he reached out to police but they did not take him seriously, some media reports read.
However, DCP North, Jatin Narwal said the victim had submitted a police complaint which he later withdrew demanding no police action. "No police case was registered in this regard," Narwal said.
The incident had come to light less than two months after an 18-year-old student of Dyal Singh College was allegedly attacked for belonging to the Scheduled Caste. The victim, who had alleged that he was attacked by an ice pick and glass bottles by a group of Jats, had reportedly got 14 stitches on the face.
Just a week after this incident, a 23-year-old sportswoman was also allegedly manhandled by a group of men when she was on her way to her hostel. The woman, in her police complaint said the boy mistook her for a man and started bullying her. They touched her inappropriately and assaulted her when she shouted that she was a girl and fled from the spot, she said.
